Why Your Website Isn’t Converting (And How To Fix It)

You’ve spent time (and no doubt some Benjamins) building your coaching website, but it’s not bringing in clients. Instead of booking calls and filling your programs, it’s sitting there like a digital brochure—nice to look at, but not doing much for your business.

Here’s the truth: Your website isn’t just a place to “look professional.” Reality check: Brochureware went out in 2002. Instead, your website should be a conversion machine that turns visitors into paying clients. If it’s not doing that, it’s time for an upgrade.

In this post, we’ll cover the 5 most common and most critical website mistakes leadership coaches make – and exactly how to fix them. Apologies in advance, because we’re pulling zero punches in this issue. If any of these five sound familiar, it may sting a little, but now is the time to change course and fix things. OK, enough said. So without further ado…

#1: Your Messaging is Vague (or All About You)

When someone lands on your website, they should instantly know who you help, how you help them, and why they should care. If your site doesn’t immediately convey this, you aren’t going to convert. Plain and simple.

Does your website say something like: “I help leaders reach their full potential.”

Yeah, that sounds OK but isn’t reaching a conversion, is it? It’s too vague. What kind of leaders do you help? How do you help them? Make this front and center.

Or how about: “Welcome to my website! I’ve been coaching for 10 years and have multiple certifications.” Brochureware red-flag. This is about you, not them.

Your home page should speak directly to your ideal client’s pain points and desired transformation. Make your headline uber-clear and super specific. Name your niche and hit their pain when you do it. Something more akin to: “Helping Senior Executives Build High-Performing Teams Without Burnout.”

Pro Tip: When we build sites for our clients at Chart Room Creative, we put the home pages through the 5-second test – if a visitor can’t understand what you do and who you SPECIFICALLY serve in five seconds? You’re going to lose them.

#2: Your Website Lacks a Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

We yearn for direction. You are coaches. You know this.

If your site doesn’t tell visitors exactly what to do next, they’ll leave.

Tell me if this sounds like you.

You have a single “Contact Me” button buried in the footer. Or worse, you provide every random conversion point under the sun – Book a Call, Download This, Read That, Follow Me, etc.

You will instantly gain more traction and prime your site for more leads if you:

  • Use one primary CTA that guides visitors toward your sales process (e.g., “Book a Free Strategy Call”).
  • Make your CTA clear, visible, and action-oriented.

Place your CTA at the top of your homepage, at the end of every section, and in your website’s navigation menu.

Pro Tip:
Use action-driven language. Instead of “Schedule a Call,” go with something like “Let’s Build Your Leadership Plan—Book a Free Strategy Call Today.” In our experience, converting to action-driven language can yield up to a 40% increase in conversions, all other improvements held constant.

#3: Your Design is Hurting Conversions

Simple and clean should be your motto. A cluttered, outdated, or hard-to-navigate website creates friction. You hate friction. We hate friction. Friction is bad. It makes visitors leave before they ever book a call.

You create friction when you have text-heavy pages with no visual hierarchy, slow load times (clients won’t wait for a slow site to load!), poor mobile experience (over 60% of web traffic is now mobile). A combination of these factors is even worse – a slow loading mobile experience with no visual hierarchy that is text-heavy. I mean, yikes.

The fix is straightforward. Use simple, clean layouts with plenty of white space. Make sure your site loads in 3 seconds or less – on both mobile and desktop. And ensure your website is mobile-first – make sure it flows and is impeccably designed on mobile even at the cost of desktop. But the ideal is a fully mobile-responsive that naturally reorganizes and the layout flows from desktop to mobile and everything in between.

Pro Tip: Run your site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights to check speed and mobile usability. If you have issues, do a quick Google search for Lighthouse report and use it to identify what’s slowing things down. It can be a bit much to work through, so if you aren’t the most tech savvy in your crew, get help from a partner or give us a shout at Chart Room Creative.

#4: You’re Not Capturing Leads

It’s about the funnel, my friends. Not every visitor is ready to book a call right away, but that doesn’t mean they should leave empty-handed. If you don’t have a lead capture strategy, you’re missing out on potential clients. Every touchpoint should lead to more touches. Don’t ever let a potential lead walk away uncaptured and unnurtured.

Two of the biggest mistakes we see most often are relying only on a “Book a Call” button, and not offering anything valuable in exchange for an email.

Reciprocity in the field of persuasion psychology is so real it’s not even funny. Add a lead magnet—a free resource that provides value and collects email addresses. It doesn’t matter if it its a leadership checklist, a free masterclass, an executive coaching guide. When you give a little, you get a lot.

And of course, follow up with an automated email sequence that nurtures leads and directs them to book a call. Work the lead from problem unaware, to solution aware and ready to buy.

Pro Tip:
Place an email opt-in form in multiple locations (homepage, blog posts, pop-ups, footer). Get that email and then provide value in a nurture sequence that proves you have something worth their time.

#5: You’re Ignoring SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

If no one can find your website, it doesn’t matter how good it looks. SEO ensures your ideal clients discover you when they search for solutions online.

Now, know this. The landscape for SEO is changing rapidly with the emphasis on AI generate search results. AEO is quickly becoming a crucial consideration. But whether SEO or AEO, some things naturally kill traffic:

  • No keyword optimization—your site isn’t ranking for what your audience is searching for.
  • No content strategy—Google prioritizes fresh, relevant content.
  • Missing metadata—title tags, descriptions, and headers matter.

Even with the changing search landscape, xEO experts still push the following tenets which appear to still hold true regardless:

  • Research keywords your ideal clients are searching for (e.g., “executive coaching for confidence,” “how to lead a remote team”).
  • Optimize your homepage, services page, and blog posts with relevant keywords.
  • Publish valuable content (blogs, videos, case studies) consistently.

Pro Tip: We highly recommend using tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest and Answer The Public to find the right keywords for your coaching niche.

If you are drawing blanks and the nearest to the top of the results is the 9th page of Google, then we’d recommend you partner with an AEO/SEO partner. And as you might imagine, we’re here to help. Just reach out to us at Chart Room Creative and we’ll help you get sorted out for search.

So that’s it. The 5 most common and most critical mistakes we see with our coaching clients.

Now it’s gut-check time. If your website isn’t converting, it’s time to make some changes:

  • Refine your messaging– make it client-focused, not coach-focused.
  • Clarify your CTA – tell visitors exactly what to do next.
  • Improve design & mobile experience– simplify, speed up, and optimize.
  • Capture leads– offer a free resource and nurture them with emails.
  • Implement AEO/SEO – optimize for keywords so your site ranks higher.

Your website should work for you, not just sit there collecting dust. Pick one of these over the next 3 weeks and implement some changes, and then let us know if you start to see a positive impact.

And if you need help in any of these areas, Chart Room Creative has 20 years of experience, helping our clients create sticky brands and conversion-fueled web properties to drive growth. If you’re ready to get started, contact us and we’ll get to work for you.
